Tribhuvan International Airport at Katmandu, the capital city of Nepal is the largest and most important airport in Nepal. Operated and managed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, this lone international airport is about six kilometers from the heart of Katmandu. Some of the features associated with Tribhuvan International Airport are as given:
- It is the most important and only international airport in Nepal.
- The airport has two terminals, one domestic and one international.
- The international terminal besides having a few duty-free shops does have limited amenities. The domestic terminal does have a few shops and cafes.
- Most of the airlines operating here are Asian, such as Indian Airlines, Air China, Air Sahara, Jet Airways, Gulf Air, Agni Air, Korean air, Qatar Airways, royal Nepal Airlines and a few others. Currently, Austrian Airlines is the lone European airliner that operates seasonal flights from here.
- The airport provides for passenger, cargo and a limited number of chartered flights too.
Simara and Pokhara are the smaller airports in Nepal that are used mainly for chartered flights. Operated by the civil aviation authorities, these airports however require government clearance for the aircraft usage on account of the strategic importance of the places. Nepalgung Airport with one small runway operates during specific hours for nearly ten months in a year. Janakpur Airport again operates with one runway and limited hours all through the year. Chandragadhi, Biratnagar and Bhairahawa are the other smaller airports used mainly for chartered flights and do have operational and infrastructural limitations. |
