The Indira Gandhi International Airport is the main airport of New Delhi, the capital city of India. Previously the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi was known as the Palam Airport but after a new terminal (terminal 1) was opened in the airport, it started functioning as the international terminal and the name was thus changed. From then the Indira Gandhi International Airport, which was named after the former Prime Minister, has been functioning as the main international airport in the city and the Palam Airport with the old terminal (terminal 1) is functioning as the main domestic airport in New Delhi.At present the IGI Airport is enjoying the status of one of the main domestic and international gateways of the country that keeps Delhi connected with other parts of the country and the world.

- About the operation of the IGI Airport:
At present the Indira Gandhi International Airport has a total annual capacity of carrying around 12.5 million passengers and serves several international airlines through two busy non-parallel runways and one auxiliary runway. On march, 2006, IGI became the first Indian airport to operate two runways simultaneously. At present the IGI Airport serves 35 international airlines with aircrafts flying to different venues at regular intervals. It is also the base of several domestic and international airlines like Air India, Air China, Air Canada, Air France, Air Sahara, American Airlines, Asian Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Emirates, Japan Airlines, Kuwait Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Saudi Arabia Airlines, Thai Airways, International,Turkish Airlines.

Being situated in New Delhi and the hub of several domestic and international airlines, the IGI airport provides a world-class hospitality service to the passengers checking in and checking out from the airport. The interior of the IGI airport is well-decorated and various facilities are available including a 24 hours help desk, car parking and hiring facilities, left-luggage facilities, baggage wrapping services, public transport services, special arrangements for disabled persons, bank, post office, currency exchange centers at both terminals, restaurant, snacks corners, cafeteria, conference and banqueting facilities, resting rooms, ambulance services, pharmacy, 24-hours medical units and a duty shop. The interior of the international terminal covers a huge space and has a comfortable seating arrangement for large number of passengers. The electronic board is providing regular updates about the schedule of international flights. The Airport is located at a very convenient place of the region and at a very close distance from most of the five star hotels.
